Roots of the Journey
Behind every delicious glass of almond milk lies a remarkable journey. Before our favorite beverage comes to life, a tremendous amount of work takes place. The most critical step? Pollination. Honey bees play a vital role in fertilizing almond trees, which cannot self-pollinate.As they collect pollen and nectar from the blossoms, they set in motion the magical process of growing almonds.
A Trio of Success
The classic saying ‘it takes two to tango’ gets a twist when it comes to pollinating almonds – it takes three to tango! (farmer, driver, grower). In order to make the pollination of almond trees possible, it takes the entire bee population of the country to pollinate the almond trees. Every year, millions of bees make the journey to California, traveling in style on flatbeds under the cover of night. Their bee hives are carefully loaded and covered with specialized nets to ensure their safety.
Bee Bed & Breakfast
Upon arrival in California, the bees are unloaded at dawn or dusk, ready to start their vital work. As they flit from blossom to blossom, they transfer pollen and bring the almond trees to life. It’s a remarkable spectacle that highlights the incredible importance of these tiny, winged workers.
